Galbiati Group has recently manufactured a 4,400 mm diameter telescope in consortium with the company EIE GROUP, an engineering company and an excellence in the Italian industrial landscape in the astronomy sector.
Galbiati collaborated with the Turkish university body, ISIK UNIVERSITY, and the AMOS company, specialized in the design and production of high precision mechanical opto systems for the space industry and for astronomy, for the production and construction of a new 4 meter telescope for the Eastern Anatolian Observatory in Turkey. DAG (Dogu Anadolu Gözlemevi, Turkish Eastern Anatolia Observatory) is a project funded entirely by the Turkish Ministry of Development and by the Atatürk University of Astrophysics Research Telescope – ATASAM.
The DAG telescope is a major project for Turkey, whose largest currently operating telescopes do not exceed a diameter of 1.5 meters. This development will allow the country to favourably position itself among the main nations in astrophysics. The telescope will be installed at an altitude of 3,170 m on the Erzurum plateau, in eastern Anatolia, it will be the greatest telescope in Turkey and, incidentally, in the Asian continent.
The DAG telescope was designed as a multi-purpose equipment with scientific objectives such as studies of cosmology, study of galaxies, minor bodies of the solar system, understanding of the formation of stars, studies of the planets, etc.
The DAG telescope is equipped with a focal length of 56 m and a 4 meter primary mirror and is capable of receiving both visible and infrared wavelengths. It is also equipped with two Nasmyth Focii that can be selected thanks to an adjustable tertiary mirror. While a Nasmyth focus will provide limited image quality, the other will be equipped with an adaptive optical system to achieve limited diffraction performance. This requires specific design provisions and the implementation of state-of-the-art equipment such as the optical system for the research of millesimal radiofrequencies from the deep universe.
GALBIATI GROUP in collaboration with EIE GROUP, which was mainly involved in the design of the entire telescope structure and then of the on-site installation, has placed the greatest attention to all the operations for the construction of the telescope, at the Oggiono workshops, and the collaboration with the managers of AMOS and ISIK UNIVERSITY. Beyond the mere contractual terms, it was a common goal that the final result was positive and perfectly satisfying in order to confirm the professionalism acquired by GALBIATI GROUP in the specific sector of antennas and radio telescopes, to constitute a further positive reference that is added to the many references already acquired and related to constructions throughout the world, and to further increase the professionalism so high in such a specific and fascinating sector as that of radio astronomy.
DAG telescope technical data:
- total weight: 69,268.88 kg
- structure diameter: 4,400 mm
- structure height = 10,243 mm
- maximum width = 13,900 mm
Below photos and video of the construction and inspecftion visit of the DAG telescope.
